Fostering a Pet: This item is at the top of our
volunteer opportunity list because we believe very strongly that fostering is the best way
to help our animals become more adoptable. Bringing an animal into your home will give
that animal the opportunity to learn how to be a member of a persons family to
include socialization with children and other animals, learning house manners,
house training, etc. It also gives SFAR the opportunity to learn, from you, details about
how the animal behaves in an environment away from the Ranch. Is the pet good with
children, cats, other dogs? Is the animal house trained? What is this animals
personality like? What adoption situation would best suit this animal? All that we ask is
that you provide food, water, shelter, and lots of loving care. SFAR will pay for
heartworm prevention and veterinary care. If you would like to cover these costs, just let
us know!
Daily Animal Care and Maintenance: Cleaning
dog runs, feeding, and watering are daily tasks that are essential to ensure a quality
living environment for all animals residing at the Ranch. Annamaria and her family would
welcome a break from time to time, so come on down!
Fundraising: Fundraising is crucial to
SFARs existence! (As we all know, veterinarians dont work for free! In 2000,
we spent more than $8,500 on veterinary expenses.) We are always looking for individuals
interested in organizing and/or participating in fundraising activities. Activities that
SFAR has been involved with in the past include photos with Santa at PetsMart, Christmas
Angel Tree, yard sales, bakes sales, car washes, etc.
Animal Health: Administering vaccinations and
heartworm prevention, applying medications, removing ticks, etc.
Bathing and Grooming: Bathing, grooming,
removing matted fur, cutting nails, cleaning ears, etc. Unsurprisingly, most animals are
not clean and well-groomed when they are rescued.
Emergency/Rescue Assistance: SFAR
is looking to form a solid, organized group of volunteers that are willing, with the
proper training, to do emergency cases in the Clarksville-Montgomery County area. These
would include investigating animal abuse reports, picking up animals in need, etc.
Canine Socialization and Training: One-on-one
time with SFAR animals (e.g. walking, training (basic commands), bringing the animal to
your home or to another location for exposure to sights and sounds other than those at the
Ranch).
Canine Behavior Counseling: Being a
resource/counselor to volunteers, adoptive pet owners, and other individuals that look to
SFAR for support in dealing with a canine behavior issues.
SFAR Newsletter: SFARs newsletter, Pause
for Paws, is always looking for individuals to contribute poems, articles, references,
sketches, pictures, etc. Approximately 350 copies of the newsletter are mailed quarterly.
Assistance with copying, folding, labeling, and stamping is always appreciated!
Transportation: The need to transport animals
to and from the Ranch, the veterinarian, PetsMart, etc. is a regular occurrence. On
occasion there may also be a need to transport to a meeting place when animals
are being adopted out-of-town, out-of-state, or when they are relinquished to another
no-kill rescue organization. How far you want to drive is completely up to you!
Construction and Maintenance: Installing
chain link fencing, constructing covers for the dog runs, repairing doghouses
. you
name it!
Administrative Tasks: Filing, phone calls,
mailings, Internet research, computer work, etc.
Public Relations: Soliciting donations from
businesses, seeking advertising information, staying in contact with the Clarksville
Volunteer Center, posting flyers, keeping abreast on animal-related legislation, etc.
Education: Giving animal-related presentations to
small groups (e.g. elementary, intermediate or high school students, boy/girl scout
troops, daycare classes, etc.), preparing educational literature for distribution, etc.
