Special Needs Animals

Jewel, after arrival at SFAR
and a good meal and water.

Jewel, obviously in pain, but resting.

JEWEL

Jewel is a normal 4 month old puppy except for one major difference.  She was unwanted by her owner so she was shot to run her off and left to fend for herself.  She may be lucky in that the bullet that entered her from behind and exited through her left thigh did not kill her, or that she did not bleed to death, or die from some horrible wound infection.  Nor did this little girl die of starvation.  She was lucky in that she survived on her own long enough for a concerned neighbor to seek help for her.  When the local humane organizations declined to help her, St Francis Animal Sanctuary was contacted and immediately took on her care.

May 9, 2004:  "Jewel" the little girl from Montgomery County is here with me. My husband brought her home a little while ago.  She's about four months old, covered with ticks, perhaps a little lab, terrier mix. She's emaciated, and probably weighs less than 10 pounds right now and is dehydrated.  From the looks of her little body, she should have been around 20 pounds.  She was shot on her left hip, probably by a 22 or 25 caliber, the bullet is still in her. She has no use of the leg at this point, and it could be permanent if nerve damage is found. I talked to the vet, and agreed it could wait until morning, although it may sound very bad, the wound is two to three days old, and doing surgery tonight wouldn't change the damage done already.  I started her on antibiotics.  She is eating and drinking well, which is a great sign.  Will let you know more tomorrow......for now she's resting in my lap!

May 10, 2004:  "Jewel was taken to the vet first thing this morning.  She weighed in at 8.7 lbs, and is about 17-18 weeks old.  The bullet shattered the bone at the upper end of her leg.  My vet felt comfortable saying that she should heal up okay since she is so young.  The bone should re-grow and she shouldn't have problems later on in life. The bone was lined up, and is now all wrapped up in a splint, She will be in the splint for the next several weeks."

bullet and align bone fragments.

May 16, 2004:  "Her femur was shattered, but the pieces all seem to be aligned well.  Due to her young age, hopes remain high for her leg healing completely, but only time will tell.  She has gained weight in the past week, now weighing 11 lbs. Prayers and financial support are very much needed, as is a foster or permanent home."

As Annamaria McCoy of SFAR said the evening she was waiting for her husband, Lee, to bring Jewel to her, "...we have only a few hundred dollars left.  Those of you who know me well, know that in one way or another, that pup will get the medical care and relief it needs, even if I have to sell the clothes on my back to do it."  It is about to that point at SFAR.  The bank account is dangerously low, there may be enough in the account to buy dog food for a month for the abandoned and neglected companion animals that have found refuge at SFAR.  There definitely is not enough to pay the vet bills for the surgery and attention this young dog needs, nor the other special needs pets waiting for needed procedures.  Jewel has received the emergency care she needs and is resting comfortably in Annamaria's home.  However, the bills need to be paid and more expenses will be incurred before she is ready for adoption.

June 2, 2004:  Jewell is recovering very well from her injuries. The splint was taken off, and is now slowly gaining use of the leg, putting weight on it.  There is an approved adoption application waiting for her, and her new "parents" will be meeting her soon. Hopefully, if all will work out, she'll be going to her new home soon....will let you know.  In the meantime, there have been some significant medical bills accumulate for her care.

Jewel has been adopted!  This lucky puppy has been adopted and is now enjoying life as all dogs should; as a loved member in a human family that loves and respects her for herself.

Jewels medical bills were extensive.  Anyone wishing to donate toward the medical bills that accumulated for Jewel, please, use the PayPal button above or you may send a check to her veterinarian, Dr. Anderson, at the address below.

BUFFY

Buffy, a 2 to 3 year old, blonde, female Cocker Spaniel won the hearts of SFAR immediately when she was surrendered to them.  Her sweetness and response to kindness and the constant wag of her tail said, "I need a second chance."  Looking at her sweet face, does not belie the horrible baggage this baby came to SFAR with.  She had several mammary tumors, including one the size of a grapefruit.  On May 13, 2004, Dr. Anderson removed the cancer and all of her mammary glands to help prevent the recurrence of her cancer.  This has been done with the hope that her malignancy is the type that is curable with surgery.  Tissue samples have been sent to UT for pathology determination.

Many prayers and financial support are needed for Buffy, and her surgery.

June 2, 2004:  Buffy's test results were those we hoped for: breast cancer of the type that is treatable with surgery.  With all the mammary glands now removed, this sweet girl should have a long, happy life. She has fully recovered from her surgery, both the stitches and the drainage tubes were removed today. She's totally housebroken, full of life, and sweet as she can be.

Buffy - now ready for her forever home.

July 21, 2004:  Buffy has recovered from her surgical ordeal and now is considered a normal dog.  Her greatest need now is a home of her own.

BUFFY HAS BEEN ADOPTED!  This sweet girl is also now living with a human family that loves her for the wonderful, sweet girl she is.

SFAR is still trying to recover from her medical expenses.  Anyone wishing to donate toward the medical bills that it took to take care of Buffy, please, use the PayPal button above or you may send a check to her veterinarian, Dr. Anderson, at the address below.

BUMPER

Bumper, a 3 to 4 year old, 125 pound, male St. Bernard, was abandoned into the care of SFAR.   When one of the SFAR volunteers left work late one night, she found him tied to the bumper of her car with a note, "...take care of my boy."  She contacted SFAR and took him to the ranch in the morning.  He was evaluated that day and found to have heartworms.  He has been successfully treated!  Since heartworm treatment is based on the weight of the dog, Bumper's heartworm treatment was quite expensive.

BUMPER HAS BEEN ADOPTED!  This gentle giant now has a loving home of his own.

As with the other special needs dogs, SFAR is still recovering from the medical expenses that were required to treat Bumper.  Anyone wishing to donate toward the medical bills accumulated for Bumper, please, use the PayPal button at left or you may send a check to his veterinarian, Dr. Anderson, at the address below.
